The Microsoft Software giant co-founder is definitely one of the richest people in the world, a billionaire who has consistently boosted his native Seattle, WA city. He has financed a brand new library, computer center and several medical school undertakings for the urban UofW.
His most recent project is in a very large downtown neighborhood, South Lake Union Seattle. It represents nearly half of Seattle's downtown, just northwest of the established central business area. Allen's Vulcan Real Estate company bought 60 acres, a third of the neighborhood, and has launched a mixed-use urban campus. It has offices and research facilities, hotels and stores, including a new Whole Foods store. It also has hundreds of apartments, including luxury condos and low-income housing. The first new buildings opened in 2004. A 12-acre park opens in September, which gives Seattleites their first easy access to the Lake Union waterfront. A new streetcar line ties it to the rest of downtown. Amazon, the nation's largest online retailer, was among the first of the area's many high-tech businesses to relocate its headquarters there on an 11-building campus.
As Paul Allen continues to develop urban areas with extensive infrastructure, resources and new residences, the landscape of the area will brighten and be changed for the better.
